Veterans and First Responders

At The Akani Center, we offer specialized programming tailored to veterans and first responders. Our Mission-Vet Treatment Model integrates evidence-based therapies, specialized interventions, and peer support to address their unique challenges, including PTSD, depression, substance abuse, and eating disorders. With our compassionate team and personalized approach, we're dedicated to helping those who've served find healing and renewed purpose.

  • The journey begins by conducting thorough research and needs assessments to understand the specific mental health challenges faced by veterans and first responders.

  • The Akani Center utilizes a multidisciplinary team comprising licensed professional counsellors, substance abuse counselors, occupational therapists, and peer support specialists. Our team has expertise in trauma-informed care and experience working with veterans and first responders.

  • The Akani Center incorporates trauma-informed care principles throughout the program. This involves creating a safe and supportive environment, prioritizing trust-building, and recognizing the impact of trauma on individuals' lives.

  • Each person will receive a comprehensive assessments to identify their unique needs, including mental health concerns, substance use history, medical conditions, and social support systems.

  • Therapists will develop individualized treatment plans based on the assessment findings. These plans are tailored to address each participant's specific needs and goals, incorporating evidence-based interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, mindfulness-based approaches, and medication management when necessary.

  • The Akani Center emphasizes involvement of peer support staff where veterans and first responders who have successfully navigated similar challenges can provide support and mentorship to participants. Peer support can help reduce stigma, enhance engagement, and foster a sense of community.

  • At Akani, we take a holistic approach to treatment by addressing not only mental health issues but also physical health, nutrition, sleep hygiene, and recreational activities. Incorporating activities like yoga, meditation, art therapy, and outdoor adventures can promote overall well-being and resilience.

  • When possible, we like to involve participants' families and social support networks in the treatment process. Providing education, resources and support to family members about the challenges faced by veterans and first responders can help them to understand what is happening to their loved one and how they can offer their support.

  • It is important to develop a robust aftercare plan to support participants' transition back to their communities and workplaces. This may include ongoing therapy, support groups, vocational rehabilitation, and coordination with local VA centers or community mental health providers.

  • At The Akani Center, we recognize that both the military and first responder community are each their own unique culture. In addition, further diversity within the veteran and first responder cultures, including differences in background and identity. We work to ensure that the program is culturally sensitive and inclusive, with services tailored to meet the needs of all participants.

By modeling these guidelines and principles, The Akani Center has developed a comprehensive and effective treatment program for veterans and first responders that addresses their unique mental health needs and supports their overall well-being and recovery.
